Top chef shares ‘life changing’ aluminium foil hack for one of the most frustrating kitchen problems

A top chef who worked under Heston Blumenthal has revealed the ultimate aluminium foil hack that will solve one of the most frustrating problems in the kitchen.

British-born chef Robbie Bell has shared a now-viral TikTok video showing what to do when your foil starts to ‘spiral’, leaving behind uneven layers.

"This is one of the best kitchen hacks I’ve ever been shown," said Robbie, the owner and head charcutier at City Larder in Melbourne.

Instead of trying to slowly ‘unpeel’ all the ‘spirals’, Robbie scrunches a section of foil into a ball - and uses that to scratch the damaged layers.

Unbelievably, this simple abrasive action works to ‘release’ the layers, making it possible to use the rest of the roll like normal.

No, we can't quite believe it either.

"If your tin foil ever gets knotted up like this, take a little bit [of foil] off, rub it on the part where it's overlapped or it's not working properly and it’ll all come away," Robbie said.

"Just unroll the tin foil as if it's brand new.

"You’re welcome."

Robbie thanked his chef friend Shaun Hurrell, whom he considers "a brother", for sharing his nifty foil hack.

His video has been viewed more than 1.6 million times, with many saying the trick will change their lives.

"This is literally been the bane of my existence," one wrote.

Another said: "Unbelievable this has done my head in for years."

One wrote: "Thank you for sharing your wisdom on a problem I have suffered for years."

While another said: "Today, I have seen this and now my life will never be the same. I needed to see this."

Another insisted the trick has "made my whole life" while many said they wished they’d known the tip sooner.

Many admitted they have either thrown away damaged foil rolls over the years or spent ages trying to fix the spiralled layers.

"I’m now so relieved I don't have to chuck it away anymore. Great hack," one wrote.

Another said: "Wait what. I won't sleep tonight thinking of all the rolls of foil that took a pounding and ended up in the dump."

While another added: "I so needed this, I’m there with a sharp knife for ages trying to pick the edges up when this happens."

And one added: "My life is now complete, it really is the small things in life."
